A reckless unlicensed commuter omnibus driver allegedly sped through a red traffic light, hitting a woman with a child strapped on her back, killing them on the spot. Isaac Ruhukwa (27), appeared in court facing charges of culpable homicide and driving without a licence. Harare magistrate Arnold Maburo remanded him in custody to September 12 for trial.

Allegations are that on August 22 at around 7pm, Ruhukwa was driving a Toyota Hiace registration number ACE 0689 along Robson Manyika Road in Harare’s city centre. It is the State’s case that the now deceased, Tsitsi Rwodzi, was crossing the same road with her baby strapped on her back. Ruhukwa allegedly proceeded against a red traffic light while speeding and knocked down the deceased with her child.

Mother and child reportedly fell down some metres away from the scene of the accident. The court heard that the baby hit the tarmac and died on the spot from serious injuries.

It is alleged that the mother also sustained severe injuries and died upon admission at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.
The vehicle was towed to the Vehicle Inspectorate Department in Eastlea after it sustained damages.

The State alleges that Ruhukwa was negligent in his conduct and was travelling at an excessive speed.
Ms Barbra Ndoro appeared for the State.
