He admitted to the charges of culpable homicide and driving without a licence. He was convicted on his own plea by Chitungwiza magistrate Ms Rumbidzai Mugwagwa.
Ms Mugwagwa sentenced him to 12 months for culpable homicide and suspended four on condition of good behaviour.
She slapped Ndowora with an effective eight months for driving without a licence. Ndowora said he drove the vehicle without a licence because he wanted to fend for his family.
But Ms Mugwagwa said he acted unreasonably by driving without a licence and trying to escape after hitting the child who died on the spot.
“You were speeding in the residential area and killed a child,” she said.
“If you want to be a driver you should take a driving test rather than jumping on the steering wheel.”
Prosecutor Mr Henry Muringani said on June 3, Ndowora was driving the commuter omnibus along Hadzinanhanga Road in Chitungwiza.
The omnibus had seven passengers on board.
Upon approaching Zengeza 4 Shopping Centre, a child attempted to cross the road to join her mother on the other side.
Ndowora hit the child and dragged it for about 10 metres, resulting in the minor dying on the spot.
He tried to escape and drove for about 100m before being intercepted by another motorist.
