years.
Jeremia Marembo (24) appeared before Mr Arnold Maburo who convicted him of three counts of culpable homicide, driving without a licence and failing to report an accident.
On the first count, Mr Maburo sentenced Marembo to three years in prison and on the second count he was sentenced to six months in jail.
For failing to report an accident, Marembo was ordered to pay a US$100 fine before May 31 or risk going to prison for 30 days.
Mr Maburo slapped Marembo with an effective three years and six months jail term.
In passing sentence, Mr Maburo said Marembo’s moral blameworthiness was high.
Marembo admitted to fleeing the scene of the accident, arguing that he was not stable and was scared after realising that he had run over a person.
Prosecutor Ms Barbra Ndoro said that on March 5 at around 6pm, Marembo was driving a Toyota Hiace registration number ABN3322 along Robert Mugabe Road towards Eastlea in Harare.
At VID Eastlea, he allegedly ran over a pedestrian who was crossing the road.
The court heard that the pedestrian died at Parirenyatwa Hospital due to injuries sustained in the accident. Marembo ran away from the scene and went to Beatrice where he got a job at a farm as a general worker.
