Unlicensed kombi driver jailed 2 years

Oscar Kashesha (34) of Glen View 3 quickly disappeared from the scene after hitting Sydney Sangura who is deaf and dumb.
Harare magistrate Mr Archie Wochiunga convicted Kashesha of reckless driving after a fully contested trial.
Passing sentence, Mr Wochiunga said there was a rampant rise in negligent driving cases by commuter omnibus drivers.
He also highlighted that Kashesha was driving without a licence.
“Kashesha is not a holder of a valid driver’s licence since he failed to produce one before the court despite being given more than five days to do so.
“It, therefore, means there is no licence to cancel,” he said.
The State proved that on December 1 last year along Mbuya Nehanda Street, Kashesha who was driving a Toyota Hiace in the afternoon saw police officers who were barricading the road.
He swerved off the road in a bid to evade them and in the process hit Sangura who was at the edge of the road.
After hitting Sangura, Kashesha fled from the scene leaving him lying on the ground in agony.
As a result of the accident Sangura lost three teeth and sustained severe injuries on the right shoulder and waist.
Onlookers immediately rushed Sangura to the hospital. Kashesha was only arrested 15 days later.
Several kombi drivers have over the past years been arrested and prosecuted for reckless driving and attempted murder after trying to run over police officers as they tried to escape or pay fines for traffic offences.
