Cabman shot in botched robbery

Ashton Katsande (17), Future Nyamuruma (18) and a 15-year-old boy – all of Chitungwiza – were arrested by members of the recently formed Police Support Unit Armed Response Team.
Support Unit spokesperson Inspe-ctor Charles Jack yesterday said the three were assisting them with investigations and they had recovered a .38 Special Arminius revolver.
“They are expected to appear in court facing attempted murder and armed robbery charges,” he said.
He said on Saturday the three hired an Eagles Taxi driven by Billard Mashupiko near Mohammed Mussa Wholesalers in Harare at around 2pm.
Along Greendale Avenue, one of the suspects ordered the driver to stop and Nyamuruma produced a revolver, it is alleged.
Police say when Mashupiko resis-ted, Nyamuruma fired two shots and hit him once on the left knee.
Insp Jack said Mashupiko screa-med, drawing the attention of the public who swiftly responded.
They apprehended Katsande and the 15-year-old, while Nyamuruma escaped with the revolver, it is alleged.
The Armed Response Team, Police Dog Section and detectives from the Vehicle Theft Squad began investigating.
The next day at around 2am, they arrested Nyamuruma at his home in Chitungwiza.
The Armed Response Team was formed last month to combat armed robberies and organised crime.
It has specialist Support Unit members on standby with custom-made Toyota Land Cruiser vehicles fitted with modern equipment, enhanced engines and designed to handle emergency driving conditions.
Team members specialise in weapons handling, hostage management, abseiling, entry tactics and close-quarter combat.
They are based at two pilot bases in Bulawayo and Harare.
