A CHIMANIMANI woman has been slapped with a 12-month-jail term after being convicted of selling unregistered medicines.
The convict, Lulu Madumeyana’s 12-month jail term was however, suspended on condition that she does not commit a similar offense in the next five years.
Instead, the presiding magistrate, Mr Xavier Chipato ordered her to pay a fine of US$300 failure of which she will serve 30 days in jail.
Madumeyana was convicted on her own guilty plea.
The State, led by Mr Chris Manyuku, argued that by illegally selling the unregistered medicine, Madumeyana contravened Section 50 (a) (b) and 52 (1) (a) of the Medicines and Allied Substance Control (General) Regulations, as well as Section 29(1)(a) as read with Section 29 (1a) of the Medicines and Allied Substance Control Act, Chapter 15:03.
“On March 23, 2025, Madumeyana, not being a registered medical practitioner, unlawfully and intentionally possessed pharmaceutical medicines for sale without authority or license from the Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe.
“The ZRP went to the residence of the Madumeyana as one of the clients. She started to prepare variety of the drugs and this is when other detectives arrived and showed their identification cards. They asked for the production of an authority which gives the right for a person to be a medical practitioner and distribute pharmaceutical products,” said Mr Munyuku.
A search at her residence revealed various pharmaceutical drugs which were prepared for sale.
Madumeyana pleaded guilty to the offence.
