The National Art Gallery of Zimbabwe is holding an exhibition of creative designs by young and upcoming artists. The artists include painters, sculptors as well as mixed media designers.
Running under the theme “Abatsha”, the presentation is made up of works from mainly self-taught artists and students from institutions such as the National Gallery School of Visual Arts and Design, Harare Polytechnic and the BAT Visual Arts school in Mbare among others.
The gallery aims to promote young creators who do not usually get the chance to showcase their works due to several factors including financial constraints.
“We have embarked on this inaugural project to encourage our young artists to create their works competitively and also to make them comfortable in environments such as galleries where they interact with potential buyers and admirers of their creations,” said an official from the gallery.
A young sculptor, Prevelege Garadi, expressed his desire to show how contemporary art may differ only in form from classical art, but maintains the essence of artworks regardless of the period in which it was created.
“My designs may depict objects which we see nowadays but the essence of carving stones and creating beautiful and attractive designs has always been the objective of artists since time immemorial,” said Garadi.
Young visual artists exhibiting their works include Webster Mubayireyi, Peter Musani, Franklyn Dzingai and Victor Manhondo among others.
Mixed media designs include the use of various materials to create a work of art such as painting on a surface which is pasted over with cloths and other objects, and notable works include those of Peter Musami, Tawanda Mufambi, Terrence Musekiwa and Trymore Sengai.
