UPDATED: President congratulates Nigeria’s Buhari

President Mnangagwa has congratulated his counterpart Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari for winning elections on Wednesday giving him a second term in office to lead the oil-rich country.

President Buhari (76) garnered over 15 million votes.

His closest opponent Mr Atiku Abubakar trailed by nearly four million votes.

President Mnangagwa posted his congratulatory message on his Twitter handle yesterday.

“Congratulations @MBuhari on your re-election as President of Nigeria. I wish you all the best as you continue to lead your country towards further progress and development, and fulfil the high hopes the people of Nigeria have placed in you,” he said.

According to that country’s electoral laws, a winning candidate requires a majority of votes nationwide and at least 25 percent of support in two-thirds of the states plus the Federal Capital Territory.

President Buhari won 15,191,847 votes representing 56 percent while Mr Abubakar, leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) garnered 11, 262,978 votes translating to 41 percent.
