UNITED States of America’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Pamela Tremont has condemned the second assassination attempt on Republican Party presidential candidate Mr Donald Trump, asserting that political violence must not be tolerated.

Mr Trump narrowly escaped a second suspected assassination attempt on Sunday while playing golf in Palm Beach, Florida, just two months after being shot at during a rally in Pennsylvania.

Members of the Secret Service providing security to Trump spotted the gunman, 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh, who was targeting the Republican Party candidate.

They arrested him while whisking away Mr Trump.

The United States is in the heart of election season ahead of the November polls, and the former President’s safety has become a subject of public scrutiny.

Ambassador Tremont, speaking after touring the HIV Laboratory at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo yesterday, condemned the attempted assassination of Mr Trump, saying there is no room for political violence even beyond America.

“As I discussed with President Mnangagwa after the first assassination attempt, we condemn political violence anywhere and anytime it occurs, whether it is in the United States or Zimbabwe, regardless of who the candidate is. President Biden has condemned the attempts on his opponent’s life and has called for more funding for the Secret Service to ensure former President Trump’s candidature is safer than it has been so far,” said Ambassador Tremont.

She was visiting Bulawayo for the first time after assuming her post as America’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe about three months ago.

President Mnangagwa in July described the assassination attempt on former American President Mr Trump as an act of cowardice.

The President wrote a solidarity letter to American President Joe Biden following the shooting incident, assuring the country’s solidarity with the American people.

The previous attempt on Mr Trump’s life resulted in the director of the Secret Service, Kimberly Cheatle, resigning from her post amid concerns that there was a lapse in concentration, resulting in a 20-year-old making an attempt on the former President’s life. — @nqotshili
