US$1,6 Million needed for food

Zimbabwe requires US$1,6 billion to feed at least three million of its citizens following an El Nino-induced drought that has ravaged crops and livestock, Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said.

VP Mnangagwa said this on Wednesday while addressing diplomats and non-governmental organisationrepresentatives as he made the country’s global appeal for food assistance.

A similar appeal was made to the domestic sector on Tuesday.

Winnowing Gokwe“The response plan is made up of emergency programmes to address food importation, vulnerable food distribution, emergency water supply , micro nutrient feeding of under-fives, emergency irrigation rehabilitation and development, school feeding, livestock and wildlife support, all requiring a total of $ 1 572 009 953,” VP Mnangagwa said.

“Government is conceived that collaborative efforts with the private sector and development partners  amongst others will build resilience in our communities and immensely contribute to sustainable development programmes.

“I, therefore, count on your support on this endeavor.”

Zimbabwe  – like most SADC countries – is reeling from a drought occasioned by climate change.

About 1,8 million tonnes of grain are required for human and livestock consumption annually.

President Mugabe has declared the 2015-16 agricultural season a disaster.
