Masvingo City Council has introduced a levy to raise an equivalent of US$180 000 to resuscitate the city’s street lighting system which collapsed over a decade ago due to neglect.

Every household will pay an equivalent of US$1 monthly till year end into a fund required to revive the street lights along major roads in the city centre.

Tower lights in high density areas are also a top priority and town clerk Engineer Edward Mukaratirwa is upbeat the levy will revolutionarise the city’s street lighting system.

Eng Mukaratirwa said council was financially hamstrung to use internal resources to repair the street and tower lights.

Council and power utility Zesa were at loggerheads for over a decade because of a dispute over responsibility to maintain the city’s street lighting system.
