US$2.775m ZB heist: Family to remain in custody

HARARE magistrate Evelyn Mashavakure has dismissed a bail application for the wife and three sons of cash heist suspect, Shadreck Njowa.

Patricia Kanhukamwe, Job Njowa, Washington Njowa and Takawira Njowa were remanded in custody to November 7, for trial.

The family is being charged for allegedly aiding in the commission of a crime, by lying about Shadreck’s whereabouts.

Shadreck was implicated in the US$2.775 million robbery, which occured along the Harare-Chirundu Road, on January 6, last year.

The family was advised to report Shadreck’s whereabouts to the police, if he ever got in touch.

It is alleged that last week, on Wednesday, detectives visited Njowa’s house.

They asked about Shadreck’s whereabouts.

The court heard that the family pleaded ignorance, saying they’d last seen him when he left home, on January 6, last year.

Detectives searched the house and found Shadreck hiding inside.

It is the State’s case that despite knowing that Shadreck was wanted by the police, the family concealed information about him, sheltered and fed him, in an effort to facilitate his escape from apprehension.

Moses Mapanga appeared for the State.
