of US$8 million in unpaid water bills.
Acting Town Clerk Mr Fungai Mbetsa said in a Press statement that Chitungwiza has medium- and long- term plans to have its own water source.
The council wants Harare to cede the Prince Edward Water Treatment Plant because it is situated in Chitungwiza.
The two dams and treatment plant are estimated to cost US$550 million and will have a yield of 110 megalitres a day.
Harare supplies 30 megalitres a day against a demand of 45 megalitres. This means that if Chitungwiza successfully implements its water project it will have an excess of 55 megalitres, which it can either sell to Harare or Epworth.
“The designs of the two dams are already available with the Ministry of Water Resources Development.
