AT least US$4 500 has so far been raised since last week in the annual Chinhoyi Mayor’s Christmas cheer fund. The fund seeks to raise US$6 000 for groceries before Christmas Day that will be donated to three Old People’s Homes and disabled people in the provincial capital.

Chairperson of the Mayor Christmas Cheer Fund committee, Mrs Hilda Kabangure who is also the acting housing director, said the worthy cause, was aimed at assisting the needy in the town.

“We want to raise US$6000 that will be used to buy groceries that will be distributed to Old People’s Homes in Chinhoyi.

“The Mayor will distribute these just before Christmas and I am glad to let you know that we have already managed to raise over US$4 000 and various items,” she told attendees at the launch yesterday.

The committee managed to raise a huge chunk of the money at the dinner dance held last week.

Launching the Cheer Fund yesterday evening at Chinhoyi Municipality’s Cooksey Hall,  Mashonaland West Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Marian Chombo said through selfless giving, people put smiles on the faces of the vulnerable.

“I only appeal to you that the little you give will go a long way in making a difference as a hand that gives is more blessed,” she said.

Chinhoyi Mayor, Cllr Owen Charuza and Town Clerk, Mr Maxwell Kaitano pleaded with the Chinhoyi community to help in the annual noble idea.

This year’s cheerfund carries the theme: “Building Hope, Sharing is Caring.”
