The first step in onion farming is land preparation, which includes clearing and ploughing.

Labour costs for clearing the land in Zimbabwe are approximately US$50, while renting machinery for ploughing can cost around US$150.

Additionally, conducting soil tests to determine nutrient requirements adds another US$30. So, overall, the cost for land preparation can amount to US$230.

Inputs

Quality inputs are essential for a successful onion crop. High-quality onion seeds cost about US$100 for one acre.

Significant expenses will be incurred in procuring fertilisers and soil amendments. Basal fertilisers like Compound D cost around US$80, while top-dressing fertilisers such as ammonium nitrate are priced at US$70. Organic compost to improve soil structure and fertility costs US$50.

Pest and weed control requires pesticides and herbicides that cost US$60 and US$40, respectively.

Water is another critical input, with installation of irrigation infrastructure like a drip system costing approximately US$200. The water usage costs, including pumping or metered water, are estimated at US$100. Input costs amount to US$700.

Planting

Planting involves labour and potentially renting machinery. The labour cost for planting seeds on one acre is approximately US$100.

Growing

During the growing phase, irrigation costs cover operating the system, among other things, which can be around US$50 in fuel or electricity.

Manual weeding requires labour costing about US$80, and additional herbicide applications add another US$20. Fertiliser application, including labour and equipment, costs US$30, while regular pesticide applications for pest and disease control amount to US$50. Total growing costs can, therefore, be US$230.

Harvesting

Harvesting onions involves significant labour, costing approximately US$150 for a one-acre plot.

If harvesting machinery is used, the rental costs can add another US$50. Total harvesting cost is US$200.

Post-harvest handling

Post-harvest handling includes drying, curing, cleaning, sorting, packaging and storage.

Labour for drying and curing costs about US$100, with facilities costing an additional US$50.

Cleaning and sorting labour costs are approximately US$80, with equipment costs standing at US$20.

Packaging materials like bags or crates cost around US$100, while storage costs, including rent or infrastructure construction, amount to US$150. The total cost of post-harvest handling is about US$500.

Transport to market

Transporting onions from the farm to the market involves fuel and vehicle maintenance costs, which can be approximately US$80 (but the cost is highly variable depending on the distance to the market).

Loading and unloading labour costs add another US$40, bringing the total transport cost to US$120.

Marketing

Marketing costs include market fees, broker fees and advertising fees. Fees for selling at local markets or through wholesalers are around US$50.

Broker fees, if middlemen are used, are US$30, and advertising costs for promoting the onions are US$20. The total marketing cost is US$100.

Miscellaneous

Miscellaneous costs cover licences and permits, insurance and financing.

The necessary agricultural licences and permits cost about US$30. Crop insurance or other relevant insurance policies add another US$50.

Financing costs, including interest on loans or credit used to finance production, are estimated at US$50. Miscellaneous costs amount to US$130.
