THE University of Zimbabwe (UZ) has confirmed that 12 members of staff and their families were affected by the fire that gutted one of its residential properties in Avondale on Tuesday, with the institution activating emergency measures to assist them.
In a statement, the university said no injuries were recorded despite extensive damage to several residential units.
“However, extensive damage was caused to some of the residential units. Investigations into the cause of the fire are currently underway,” the university said.
“ Assessments to determine the full extent of the damage to the affected units are also ongoing.”
The university said it was working closely with the Fire Brigade, the Zimbabwe Republic Police and other relevant authorities as investigations continue.
The UZ said its administration had activated internal emergency response mechanisms to provide immediate assistance to the affected families.
“Temporary accommodation, meals, bedding, clothing and other essential necessities have been arranged to ensure the immediate safety, dignity and well-being of those affected,” the statement said.
The university added that counselling and trauma support services were being provided through its psychosocial clinic to help affected staff members and their families cope with the aftermath of the incident.
“The University remains committed to ensuring that affected families receive the necessary support while investigations and damage assessments continue,” the statement said.
