THE University of Zimbabwe has launched the 2023 Research Innovation Industrialisation Week.
It focuses on providing solutions to societal problems.
Exhibitions at the campus include free estate planning, intellectual and legal advice from legal practitioners, members of different faculties, companies and law firms.
More than 100 exhibitions have been set up to showcase innovations, ideas and technologies from the academic community.
UZ Vice-Chancellor, Professor Paul Mapfumo, said the innovations developed should make economic sense and contribute towards building the economy.
He added that solutions should be developed into business concepts, providing entrepreneurial opportunities for society to tap into.
“This helps us in trying to understand the questions that society and the industrial community ask, as well as the business rules and entrepreneurs’ needs.
“They come up with solutions that make economic sense, in terms of addressing people’s problems.”
He said the innovations should make a contribution towards building the economy.
“We want an agenda for industrialisation and modernisation so that we push the frontiers of the development of our country to the level where it is significant globally.
“Universities have the people who are supposed to give the nation that capability.
“We should develop these solutions into business concepts, and opportunities for members of society to tap into.”
