SOCIAL football club, UZ Legends, have remained true to their mission of giving back to the community from the year they were formed in 2010.
A group of former University of Zimbabwe students, who used to play for the institution’s Division Two side, UZ Stars, found themselves in limbo after graduating.
They decided to form a social football club.
The club have, over the years, been involved in various community initiatives, as part of their social responsibility programme.
One of their major initiatives is to ensure the survival of UZ Stars, and they have been chipping in with whatever they have.
The club have also made strides in networking its members and creating a bridge between former UZ students and recent graduates.
UZ Legends secretary, Tendesai Malvern Madziwa, said their main mission was to network.
“Our main purpose is to network. We make sure that we bridge the gap between old and new students.
“We used to play for UZ Stars, who were in Division Two.
“We later decided to form the social club as old boys,” said Madziwa.
“Each member contributes a certain amount of money every month which we use for our errands and routines.
“We also fundraise to assist UZ Stars at times.
“We also participate in charity activities.
“We recently participated in a tournament to fundraise for prisoners in an event organised by a group of former prisoners.
“So, in general, football is doing a lot for us and the other factor is we are using it as a vehicle against drug abuse.
“We are going to play against Mutare Sports Club this weekend in Mutare and we hope to come out with positive results.
“The biggest thing we cherish is the chance to play and network with others.”
The club also have corporate support from Chipaz Promotions, Mr Hilux, Wiltacon, Datalyst, and Footprints Construction.
