IT seems local athletes have a busy schedule this month with more competitions coming their way as they are set to meet in Harare for the University of Zimbabwe track and field championships next week. Last weekend the focus was on the JM Busha track and field triangular series second leg at White City in Bulawayo. However, competition returns to Harare on March 25 and 26 with the UZ track and field championships.
Previously, the meet was held on one day but this time around it will be over two days. UZ deputy sports director, Liberty Maidza, said they had to change the format to allow athletes that compete in more than one event to have time to rest.
“This year we have changed the format of our championships which used to be a one-day-event to two days. This is to allow our athletes to have ample time to rest.
“We are inviting athletes from all corners of the country to come, we want to make this bigger and better. Over the years I think we’ve had a good competition, professionally run.
“We are expecting a big number and besides the numbers, we expect a competitive competition,” said Maidza.
With a number of events already held since the season began in January, national director for junior development, Silas Muringani, said with more local competitions on offer, athletes can only get better and enhance their performances ahead of major events such as the Regional Senior Championships in June.
Zimbabwe will host the regional event featuring countries from the Southern African region. “Actually it gives them a platform to sharpen up and reshape before the Southern Africa Region Senior Championships. And it also offers more opportunity to qualify for major championships, particularly for juniors.
