UNIVERSITY of Zimbabwe (UZ) Wolves and NABA scooped silver medals in the women’s and men’s categories of the 2016 Zone VI Volleyball Club Championships that ended in Swakopmund, Namibia, on Saturday.
UZ Wolves lost 0-3 to defending champions Mafolofolo from Botswana in the final, while NABA were edged 2-3 by another Botswana side Police VI. University of the Western Cape (UWC) of South Africa settled for bronze in the women’s category after beating Zimbabwe’s Support Unit 3-0 in the third place play-off, while Zambia‘s Nkwazi were third in the men’s category.
UZ volleyball coach Jonathan Gaza hailed his team’s performance and the progress of two Zimbabwean sides to the men’s and women’s final.
“This is a great achievement for the team as getting a medal in a tournament of this magnitude is a very big success. However, this also means we need to work even harder as we earned a ticket to represent the Sadc zone in the African Club Championships to be held in Rwanda in early 2017. It won’t be an easy task, so we need to improve on our attack and defence if we are to get a medal there,” said Gaza.
Zimbabwe will host the 2017 Zone VI Club Championships tournament.
