A SLOW start on Valentine’s Day in Bulawayo, filled with high anticipation, paints a picture of a day that begins quietly but brims with excitement and potential.

As the sun rises, the streets of Bulawayo’s Central Business District are still relatively calm, with a gentle hum of activity. Residents, seemingly rushing to their various businesses, their minds are already buzzing with plans for the day. The air is thick with anticipation, as people eagerly await the moments they will share with loved ones.

Shops and stores, having prepared for weeks, are fully stocked with an array of Valentine’s Day treasures.

Shelves are lined with heart-shaped chocolates, bouquets of red roses, and an assortment of gifts, from plush teddy bears to elegant jewellery.

Shopkeepers are on their toes, moving with purpose, arranging displays to catch the eye of last-minute shoppers. The scent of fresh flowers and the glimmer of gift wrap fill the air, creating an atmosphere of romance and celebration.

As the morning progresses, the pace begins to pick up. Couples start to appear, hand in hand, browsing through shops with smiles and whispered conversations. The sound of rustling paper and the occasional ring of a cash register punctuate the quiet, signaling the start of a bustling day.

Despite the slow start, there’s an undeniable energy building, a collective excitement that promises to transform the day into a memorable celebration of love and affection.

For 24-year-old Ms Simone Barkley, Valentine’s Day is a time to celebrate the bond she shares with her partner of two years.

“Today is a really special day as lovers. As people in serious relationships like myself, we like to celebrate love. So I will be expecting gifts and a romantic day with my partner,” said Ms Barkley.

42-year-old Mr Makhosi Mpofu, a father of three, sees Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to rekindle the romance in his marriage.

“Life gets busy with work and kids, but Valentine’s Day reminds us to slow down and focus on each other. My wife and I have a tradition of exchanging small, thoughtful gifts. This year, I have already bought her a beautiful necklace and booked a cozy dinner at our favorite restaurant. It is the little things that make the day special,” he said.

Restaurants and cafes have also joined in, offering Valentine’s Day-themed menus and romantic setups.

They have decorated their places with fairy lights and roses to create a magical atmosphere.
