LECTURERS at state universities across the country have attacked the government over delays in bonus and December salary payments saying this demoralised them and caused unnecessary disturbances to their family budgets. Chairman of Zimbabwe State Universities Union of Lecturers, Alois Muzvuwe, said they had engaged government several times over the delay, but nothing had come to fruition since 2012.
“We’ve been urging the government to stop giving bonuses after the festive season. Our members aren’t happy because this inconveniences their budget and happiness,” he said.
Muzvuwe said government had been giving lecturers their bonuses way after December for the past two years after civil servants would have received theirs.
“Every time, we’re told that government will be mobilising resources. We’ve hope that we’ll receive bonuses, but when everyone would’ve enjoyed theirs,” he said.
A lecturer at the National University of Science and Technology, Blessing Jona, said they weren’t happy with this growing trend as it had ripple effects towards their budgets.
“How can you send Christmas grocery to your parents and children when you receive your money after the much celebrated Christmas? It’s disheartening to see other civil servants, neighbours and workers going on holiday and buying clothes for their children while yours are starving. This isn’t fair treatment considering the level of our education,” said Jona.
