PERENNIAL veld fires are a serious threat to Manicaland Province’s timber industry, which is one of the province’s economic development pillars, the Environmental Management Agency has said.
EMA provincial manager Mr Kingstone Chitotombe said apart from timber, crops and commercial farming equipment have been lost to veld fires at some farms in the province.
He encouraged farmers in the province to adhere to guidelines on veld fires prevention like putting up fireguards.
Manicaland is among the provinces in the red zone of veld fires alongside Mashonaland East, Mashonaland Central and Mashonaland West.
Zimbabwe is in a high risk category of 65,2 percent vulnerability to veld fires due to the heavy rains received during the 2020/21 season which resulted in the growth of more vegetation.
