In a shocking incident, a Bulawayo City Council municipality police officer was manhandled before he was punched several times by a vendor for impounding his wares.

Shawn Machaya (23) appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Evia Matura facing an assault charge. He pleaded not guilty, but after the trial, he was found guilty.

The sentence will be delivered on Tuesday. The court heard that Slyvia Mwapareni and her colleagues were moving around in a lorry in the central business district confiscating goods of people who were selling at illegal points.

They stumbled on Machaya at the corner of Fife Avenue and Jason Moyo Street selling his goods at an undesignated place and Mwapareni took Machaya’s goods and threw them into their lorry. Incensed by that, Machaya jumped onto the vehicle and rained blows on Mwapareni.  She reported the incident to the police leading to Machaya’s arrest.
