Venezuela condemns US plans to seize its assets

Venezuela’s Ambassador to Namibia and Zimbabwe, Dr Magaly Henríquez González, has criticised the recent statements by United States President Donald Trump, who said the Bolivarian Republic’s oil, land and other assets “belong to the United States” and threatened an unprecedented military escalation against the South American nation.

In a statement today, Ambassador González said: “These delusional claims constitute an act of aggression without precedent in contemporary history.

“Never before has a foreign Head of State dared to claim Venezuela’s territory and natural resources as his own.”

Ambassador González said such statements, disseminated through President Trump’s social media platform, represent “a flagrant violation of the fundamental principles of international law, including sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the political independence of States, as enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations”.

She further warned of the gravity of the military threats issued, including the announcement of a naval and aerial blockade against Venezuela, which constitutes a crime of aggression under United Nations General Assembly Resolution 3314 (XXIX).

“We are facing an attempt at 21st-century recolonisation, disguised as anti-terrorist rhetoric and media manipulation.

“The true objective is the plundering of the largest oil reserves on the planet,” said Ambassador González, referring to recent statements by another top White House official who also claimed Venezuela’s oil industry was US property.

Ambassador González called upon the international community and particularly the African continent, to categorically reject these unilateral actions that threaten global peace and stability.

“Today it is Venezuela; tomorrow it could be any sovereign nation of the Global South,” she warned.

She then reiterated the unwavering commitment of the Venezuelan people to the defence of their sovereignty, their dignity and their inalienable right to decide their own destiny free from external influence or manipulation.
