South Africa-based Zimbabwean stylist and creative consultant Ngugi Vere partnered with popular drama Rhythm City and High Rollers at the just-ended Soweto Fashion Week. Rhythm City is a South African drama series on E.tv targeting the youths. The four-day Soweto Fashion Week, which was produced by Vere, ran under the theme “Africa Unite” saw about 15 designers taking part. Some of the designers who showcased at the show include Nokwakha, Bathini, Precious Lulu, Freshwear, Limba, Jebur, Kasified and Shona Accra Lifestyle (Vere’s brand).

In an interview, Vere who has worked with some of South Africa’s big celebrities and personalities, said he was happy with how the show came out and the partnership has cemented his relations with actors.

“Acting and fashion can’t be separated because either way you need to look presentable. SFW is one production I make stand-out by throwing concepts that don’t usually happen at fashion weeks.

“I am glad people are getting my vision. I want to make Africa a fashion hub by being original, trendsetting and localising our fashion for global commerce.

“Our partnership with Rhythm City is beneficial. We share exposure and platforms. We had their actors performing on our stage and to get more exposure,” he said.

Vere said his passion and purpose is to help and empower Africa through fashion.

“God inspires me. He gives me ideas and concepts every time. I can say business is going well but of course there is room for growth,” he said.

He is planning to come back home and host two shows in summer.

“Zimbabwe fashion industry lacks structure, policies and authenticity to create a strong industry with motivated people with goals.

“Most boutiques only sell foreign brands hence will never grow the talent from home. I am looking at hosting two shows in summer. I am just looking for sponsorship,” he said.

In November 2012, Vere was the only and first African to participate in a Fashion One TV Styling reality series show “Style Wars” which was shot in Asia where he gained a lot of international exposure and experience working with top stylists, fashion editors, models and Bigfoot Studios.

The show was aired in November 2013.

The stylist is also credited for a Fashion TV show “Front Ro”’ which was shot in the Philippines where he contributed content for a full episode on Africa fashion.
