FORMER Hwange central defender and captain Gerald Ndlovu believes that despite his advanced age he can still shine and help Zifa Southern Region Division One side ZPC Hwange earn promotion to the country’s elite football league.

Ndlovu (37), is a seasoned player who last season did well in ZPC Hwange colours only to see his side play second fiddle to eventual winners Arenel Movers.

“It’s unfortunate we didn’t manage to gain promotion in the past season. We are in the process of preparing for a new season and I’m very much confident we are going to get it right.

“I’m still committed to the team and I am very much confident I’m still going to shine and help the club to achieve its goals. To me age is nothing but a number. It’s all about working hard and remaining focused,” said the soft-spoken Ndlovu on the sidelines of the Zifa Southern Region Division One belated awards ceremony held last Friday at a local hotel.

Ndlovu was named among the 2023 season outstanding players together with Daven Fuzane (Talen Vision),  Zenempilo Khupe (Mainline), Ryan Ncube (Mosi Rovers), Arthur Ndlovu (Arenel Movers), Lovemore Issa (Casmyn Mine), Prince Nyathi (Bosso 90) and Mpilwenhle Dube (Jordan Sinnot).

Reformed Arenel Movers goalkeeper Aaron Ngwenya scooped the biggest accolade after he was named Player of the Year.

Ngwenya was also named Goalkeeper of the Season.

The first and second runners-up to the Player of the Year award went to Brian Jaravaza from Arenel Movers and Nqobile Nyoni from CIWU.

Grasham Karel from Indlovu Iyanyathela was named the Rookie of the Year while Kudzayi Mhandire who led Arenel Movers to promotion was named the Coach of the Year.

Prince Moyo and Khulani Gumbo grabbed the Referee and Assistant Referee of the Year gongs respectively.
