Veteran journalist Moyo dies

Moyo died at West End Hospital in Harare from injuries he sustained in a car accident on Saturday night.
In an interview yesterday, Moyo’s brother and family spokesperson Mr Agent Moyo said his brother was involved in an accident on Saturday and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at West End Hospital.
“We have lost a brother, father and a friend. He was involved in an accident on Saturday and died early today after succumbing to head and diaphragm injuries,” said Mr Moyo.

He said his brother would be buried at Emkhayeni Cemetery in Esigodini at 10am tomorrow.
When news of Moyo’s death started filtering through, condolence messages poured in with politicians and fellow journalists describing Moyo as a person with admirable attributes.
Zanu-PF national chairman Cde Simon Khaya Moyo described Moyo’s death as a tragedy.

“The death of Freedom Moyo after a car accident in Harare is a tragedy of unimaginable proportion. Freedom Moyo was a free man but defended the freedom and sovereignty of his country with his mind, pen and voice,” said Cde Khaya Moyo.

“His insightful interviews begged for cogent responses. He was a jewel in the field of journalism, a man of purpose whose career was enveloped for cherished destiny.
“Although he will be buried in Esigodini, his umbilical cord lies in Mangwe. We will miss him greatly. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”

The Governor and Resident Minister for Matabeleland South Angeline Masuku said the country had lost one of the youths that had potential.
“It is painful when one of the youths who had the potential dies in such a way. Freedom was one young man whom we were looking up to.

“He did not fully enjoy the fruits of living in an independent Zimbabwe. Ukufa kwakhe akusiphathi kuhle as leaders. We are very sorry to the Moyo family,” said Governor Masuku.
In a statement, Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) secretary-general Foster Dongozi said Moyo was a veteran broadcast journalist and a dedicated champion of workers’ rights.

“The Zimbabwe Union of Journalists joins the Moyo and Makoni families in mourning the death of Freedom, who held so much promise after having served the public broadcaster in different capacities and provinces of the country such as Matabeleland North and South, Bulawayo and Harare.

“As a bona-fide member of ZUJ, Moyo served the organisation in different capacities with astuteness. This resulted in the membership of the organisation elevating him to the national executive as treasurer from 2000 to 2004,” said Dongozi.

Reason Mpofu, a colleague and friend said Moyo’s death was not only a loss to him but to the journalism fraternity.
“I have lost a friend, brother and a great journalist. May his soul rest in peace,” said Mpofu.
Moyo was born on 18 August 1974 at Empandeni area in Mangwe District and did his primary education at Mkhayeni Primary School.
