Zimbabwean appointed to UN mission in South Sudan

“Mr Zenenga has a diverse and substantial background in political processes and mediation, proven skills in managing peacekeeping operations with over 28 years of UN, Government and diplomatic service,” reads part of the statement.
He also has more than 10 years experience at management level in complex peacekeeping operations.

The website further reads that Mr Zenenga has significant experience in working with Government and other key stakeholders in conflict and post-conflict settings. “He has 19 years of experience with the organisation in the field and at headquarters.

“As a senior manager at UN Headquarters for the last 10 years, he supported the UN Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the UN Operation in Côte d’Ivoire, among other peace operations.

“Most recently, he was the director of the Africa Division II, Office of Operations, in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations,” reads the statement.
Mr Zenenga has worked for the UN missions in Somalia, Liberia, Iraq, Kuwait and Sierra Leone. He was educated at the University of Zimbabwe and holds degrees in public administration and political science.
Mr Zenenga has also received diplomatic training from the Australian Development Assistance Bureau.

South Sudan became the world’s newest country on 9 July, 2011 and its emergence was the culmination of a six-year peace process.
The Security Council, however, determined that the situation faced by South Sudan constituted a threat to international peace and security in the region and hence it established the United Nations Mission in the Republic of South Sudan (UNMISS) to consolidate peace and security and to help establish conditions for development.
