Vic Falls VID project slammed

THE incomplete project at the Vehicle Inspectorate Department (VID) office complex in Victoria Falls is substandard, the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Transport and Infrastructural Development said on Friday.

Parliamentarians heard that the project, which included the construction of the incomplete hill-start at the VID depot, was done by Badon Enterprises.

Shurugwi North legislator Cde Robson Nyathi who led the lawmakers, blasted the project and advised the Zimbabwe National Roads Administration (Zinara) to follow-up on the projects they would have funded.

“The big thing is that the standard of work done at VID is substandard, and the citing of this hill-start must be wrong,” he said. “Money was disbursed to fund the hill-start but the project is incomplete. On the part of Zinara it shows that there is no monitoring and evaluation, and there is no adequate supervision. These are some of the recommendations we are going to give.

“The other issue is that at some of the tollgates, the infrastructure is really bad, like an instance where toilets are hired for staff at the tollgate.”

In response, Zinara board chairman Engineer Michael Madanha insisted that their role was basically to disburse funds.

Eng Madanha and Zinara acting chief executive officer, Gilfern Moyo, led the Zinara team during the tour, explaining their operations to Parliament.

The committee, which is on a tour of most tollgates, also had a brief stopover at the Umguza and Hwange tollgates, to have an appreciation of the system.
