Vice President Mohadi tours US$1.5bn Manhize Steel Plant

VICE President Kembo Mohadi is expected to tour the US$1.5 billion Dinson Iron and Steel Company (Disco) Manhize Steel Plant.

The company officially commenced steel production at its Manhize plant, marking a major milestone for Zimbabwe’s industrial sector.

It is now producing 16mm, 20mm, and 25mm deformed bars, which are final products suitable for construction purposes.

Disco is currently producing about 300 tonnes of deformed bars per day, with an annual target of 600,000 tonnes.

The company’s operations are expected to contribute to increased steel production capacity in Zimbabwe, reducing reliance on imports and enhancing self-sufficiency.

The facility will also create employment opportunities, stimulate economic growth, and contribute to the development of the manufacturing sector.

Overall, Disco’s steel production is set to play a significant role in Zimbabwe’s economic development, industrialisation, and infrastructure growth — ultimately contributing to the country’s progress and prosperity.

Vice President Mohadi has arrived at Dinson Manhize Steel Plant

He was welcomed by Midlands Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Owen Ncube, Disco managing director Mr Benson Xu and other government officials

Vice President Mohadi will tour the US$1.5b Manhize Steel Plant.

The Vice President is visiting the steel plant that is now producing 10, 25, 32 mm deformed bars with work on production of round bars in progress.

The company is producing over 600 tonnes of steel per day working towards 1 200 tonnes per day.

Dinson Iron and Steel Company (DISCO) is a subsidiary of Tsingshan Holding Group of China, one of the world’s largest stainless-steel producers.It is an integrated steel plant located in Manhize near Mvuma.

The plant is equipped with a carbon steel plant and an iron ore mine with a capacity of producing tonnes of iron and steel products per year.

UPDATE :

The Manhize steel plant is one of the Tsingshan Group of China’s mining projects in Zimbabwe.

The investor is one of the biggest investors with various other projects such as Afrochine Smelting (Pvt) Ltd in Selous, Mashonaland West, which is into chrome smelting and Dinson Colliery (Pvt) Ltd in Hwange, Matabeleland North, which is into coke production.

All these projects are interlinked as both ferrochrome and coke are required in steel production.

  1. Great initiative there and a possible revival for our national fortunes if handled well. just for the asks, how much is the cost of local tonne steel at DISCO compared to the imported . we clearly cannot export and import the same products , all things being equal.
