Vice President Kembo Mohadi departed Zambia for Harare this Sunday, wrapping up a successful tour where he witnessed the Kavalamanja/Kakaro commemorations in Luangwa district.
The commemoration is an annual event held in Luangwa District, Zambia, honouring the victims of the March 6, 1978, Battle of Kavalamanja.

It pays tribute to Zambian soldiers and civilians killed by Rhodesian forces during Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle.
The Vice President was seen off at the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport by Zambia’s Minister of Science and Technology, Felix Mutati, and a Zimbabwean delegation led by Ambassador Charity Charamba.

During his visit, VP Mohadi officiated at the commemorations, jointly held by Zambia and Zimbabwe every first week of March since 2008.
He emphasized the strong bond between the two nations, forged during the liberation struggle, and announced Zimbabwe’s initiative to rehabilitate and preserve war heritage shrines, including Kavalamanja/Kakaro.

VP Mohadi’s visit aimed to strengthen bilateral relations and promote regional cooperation, highlighting Zambia’s significant contribution to Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle.
“Zambia is a home away from home and the shrines which we are preserving are in Zambia and this goes to show how much Zambia suffered for the liberation of Southern Africa,” said the Vice President.
“At some point they hosted more than six liberation movements in Zambia and we lost a lot of our brothers and sisters here during the liberation struggle. I was here during the liberation struggle and I also lost my brother at Mkushi who died with the many female freedom fighters. This is very sentimental.
“It is very important that we take care and preserve all the liberation war shrines across the Southern African region. Our indepence was our own, we lost many lives and it is very critical that we preserve the shrines for our fellow comrades who contributed to our independence and the freedoms we are enjoying today”.
