MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai’s wife, Ms Elizabeth Macheka, was recently forced to delay her alleged Government programme at Chinotimba Old People’s Home in Victoria Falls by five hours because of a low turnout. Ms Macheka’s meeting had been scheduled to start at 9am but was forced to start at 2pm just to save face after a handful of MDC-T party supporters turned up.
Before her arrival, the MDC-T party supporters were forced to remove party regalia in a bid to make the event apolitical.
Those who had not brought extra clothes were forced to look for alternative clothing.

However, nothing materialised because the attendance still remained low as Chinotimba residents ignored Ms Macheka.
Even the truckload of food hampers, blankets and wheelchairs failed to attract people.
In separate interviews, residents said they wanted sanctions removed instead of a few groceries.

“She has brought a few groceries and some wheelchairs, but we are saying no to this nonsense. We are tired of food aid, we are tired of being beggars, we want empowerment, we want indigenisation and that can be fast tracked if MDC-T tells its funders to remove the illegally imposed sanctions,” said a woman who identified herself as  MaNcube from Ward 11.

Other residents from Ward 8 said Ms Macheka stood for MDC-T and its flawed policies which he said had turned the country into a “supermarket” economy.

He said if the party had the people at heart, it should see to it that sanctions were removed.
“The industry is dead because of the sanctions. The economy is on its knees. We therefore need policies that are for the people and not those borrowed from America by MDC-T,” said a resident.

Meanwhile, addressing a handful of party supporters who included 17 inmates at the old people’s home, Ms Macheka said her reason for visiting was not political.

“I am here as your child, I am here to donate these things to you as the old people. Society must learn to respect the elderly and help them wherever possible,” she said.

Ms Macheka also called on Zimbabweans to go and vote peacefully.
“Let us not fight one another. You must not argue over politics, let’s co-exist,” she said.
