VICTORIA Falls’ Trumus FC is closer to bringing Zifa Southern Region Division One Soccer League action to the resort town, enjoying a three-point lead at the top of the Zifa Matabeleland North Division Two log standing. The top two teams from the Zifa Matabeleland North Division Two Soccer League will at the end of the season be promoted to the regional league.
Log leaders Trumus beat visiting Prison Eagles 3-1 at Chinotimba on Saturday to take their points tally to 57 with four rounds of matches left before the season ends.
Of late, clubs from Victoria Falls have found the going tough in the Zifa Southern Region Division One Soccer League, the latest victim being Mkhosana FC who withdrew from the league after failing to pay their affiliation fees in full.
Trumus director Tafadzwa Mutowa is confident that once they win promotion, they will survive.
“Right now there is no team from Victoria Falls in Division One and this is not good at all for our community. The biggest challenge that affects existence of Victoria Falls clubs is lack of sponsorship.
“As Trumus, we have managed to secure backing which means we will be able to survive and even this season our players were happy and are looking forward to winning promotion. We want to be in Division One to compete not just to make numbers and we hope the Victoria Falls community is going to help us achieve our dream of bringing topflight soccer action to the resort town,” said Mutowa.
Trumus is facing a strong challenge from second placed Amagagasi also from Victoria Falls who have 54 points and a game in hand against third placed Baobab Rovers who have 53 points.
Trumus’ remaining matches are away to Ingagula, home to Baobab Rovers who are also eyeing promotion, away to Brazil and wrap their season with a date against Iwisa at home.
The Zifa Matabeleland North Division Two Soccer League’s championship race is likely to go to the wire as Amagagasi will along the way take on another title hopeful Baobab Rovers and an unpredictable Hwange Under-17 squad who are fourth on the table with 50 points.
Meanwhile, the Zifa Matabeleland North chairman Dennis Tshuma said all outstanding matches would be played on Wednesday, 23 October.
“We want the playing field to be level and for that reason, we want all the remaining matches to be played as soon as possible. We had tabled them for this Wednesday but because there is a Premiership game at Hwange, we decided to postpone the matches by a week,” Tshuma said.
