Villa beat Liverpool to reach FA final

Aston Villa reached their first FA Cup final since 2000 as skipper Fabian Delph’s second-half winner condemned Liverpool to another trophyless season. Liverpool led when Philippe Coutinho drove into the Villa box and clipped beyond goalkeeper Shay Given.

But Villa levelled through Christian Benteke’s first-time 18-yard finish after Delph’s pull-back from the left.

And Delph became Villa’s hero by drilling past Simon Mignolet to clinch a meeting with Arsenal on May 30.

Villa’s success ended Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard’s hopes of finishing his Reds career with an FA Cup final appearance on his 35th birthday before leaving for Major League Soccer side LA Galaxy. — AP
