possession.
Some of the robbers are suspected to be police officers while one of them is believed to be a member of the Zimbabwe National Army.
The incident took place at Kamhonde Business Centre in Kenzamba, Hurungwe on Sunday night when the six men, all of them from Chinhoyi approached the tuckshop owner, claiming to be detectives.
Four of them have since been identified as Gongongo Makumbe (35), Andrew Chigariro (39), Ronald Madyanenhire (22) and McBright Chiwakata (24).
They identified themselves as members of CID and wanted to search for gold following a tip-off.
After failing to locate the gold they demanded cash and were given $471 and a Nokia cellphone.
Mashonaland West police spokesperson Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara confirmed the incident adding that the tuckshop owner screamed for help and other tuckshop owners came to his rescue.
“Upon hearing their colleague screaming for help the tuckshop owners came in their numbers to render assistance,” said Insp Mabgweazara.
The robbers tried to flee to their getaway car – a Toyota Caldina, registration number ABH 8694 that was parked outside.
However, the villagers apprehended five of the robbers while one escaped.
They were handed over to Kenzamba Police base. Their gateway car was impounded.
The other robber who had fled was later arrested.
Insp Mabgweazara said the arrest of the six would help in clearing several robbery cases around Kenzamba and Chinhoyi.
“We would like as police to commend the public for their action in apprehending suspects.
“The spirit of helping one another in times of need are commendable. They also need to help police by supplying information on any criminal activities,” he said.
