COMMUNITIES in Cyclone Idai-ravaged areas reportedly looting food aid meant to feed pupils in schools, it has emerged.
The food was donated by the Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ).
Manicaland Provincial Administrator Mr Edgar Seenza confirmed the sad development. The villagers claim the food aid they were getting was not enough and end up stealing food meant for pupils.
“We have discovered that villagers are looting food aid meant for schools feeding under the $1 million scheme. They claim food aid is not enough,” said Mr Seenza.
Cyclone Idai which hit Chimanimani and Chipinge districts on March 15 this year destroyed crops, leaving victims in need of food aid.
Mr Seenza said some elements were also stealing donated tents and blankets. This has forced authorities to increase security at camps.
Marirwa Primary School head Christopher Muresherwa said some villagers were demanding food aid meant for pupils. “Our communities are demanding food from the schools meant for pupils,” he said.
“They argue that they are also victims of Cyclone Idai and must have a fair share of food donations.”
Chimanimani was the most affected area by Cyclone Idai which hit Manicaland Province, killing hundreds and destroying infrastructure worth millions of dollars.
