Villagers start clinic building project

VILLAGERS in Tshanyaugwe, Gwanda South, are appealing for assistance from donors to build a clinic in their area. In an interview, local ward 18 councillor Mphathiswa Ncube said the plan to build a clinic was mooted in the 1980s but lack of funding had hampered the start of the project.

“We are appealing for assistance in the form of funding and building material from the donors to come in and help us start our project. Villagers have so far managed to contribute 73 bags of cement. The idea to build a clinic came about after realisation that some people fail to access health services as they are forced to walk a distance of 15km to the nearest clinic in Buvuma,” he said.

Villagers have also managed to mould bricks which have already been taken to the site.

“We are now at an advanced stage but we still need support. Since things are looking better in the fields this year, villagers have committed much of their time towards this project because they have less stress of finding means to source food,” said Clr Ncube.

He said they were optimistic that the project would be a success as some local businesspeople have also shown interest in the project.
“However, the challenge is that only a few businesspeople are forthcoming. Only one businessman has so far chipped in and helped us purchase the bags of cement,” added Clr Ncube.

He said villagers would also need a borehole closer to the clinic site so that they do not walk a long distance to fetch water for construction.

The nearest water source is about a kilometre away.

Once completed, the clinic would serve hundreds of households in Tshanyaugwe and the surrounding area.
