Violent behaviour lands man in soup

A VIOLENT 72-year-old man from Sakubva who assaulted two people from Greenside low-density suburb was last week remanded in prison.

Tongai Mariana appeared before Mutare magistrate, Mrs Annie Ndiraya, facing charges of assaulting Susan Manyamapa (42) and her daughter.

Mr Cuthbert Bhosha prosecuted.

The court heard that on November 24, Mariana for no apparent reason assaulted Manyamapa and her daughter using open hands and a stick.

“Mariana sprung from nowhere and started assaulting the two women at the Greenside Bus Stop on the said date,” Mr Bhosha told the court.

Mariana, however, had his own version claiming that he had assaulted the two after they had provoked him.

“Your Worship, the daughter called me a stinking old man and that is why I decided to assault her. Her mother was even supporting her and laughing. I justify my actions because I was defending myself,” he argued.

Mrs Ndiraya ordered Mariana to be mentally examined by two medical practitioners before she could proceed with the matter.
