Officer commanding Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Homicide section Chief Superintendent Peter Magwenzi said this year 37 murder cases were also reported as compared to 38 last year.
He said the section had made commendable strides in ensuring that communities conduct their business in a crime-free atmosphere.
Chief Supt Magwenzi was speaking at a recent CID Homicide 2012 Christmas Party held in Harare.
“Let me express in no uncertain terms that, CID Homicide has managed to contain violent heinous crimes within and around the central business district of Harare,” he said.
Chief Supt Magwenzi said they managed to arrest a significant number of the armed robbers and this was attributed to hard work and assistance from the public.
“This is evidenced by the significant number of armed robbers who were arrested and are befittingly languishing in prison. On the same note let me also applaud the courts for complementing our efforts in this regard,” he said.
He said like any other sections in the force, they were faced with some challenges such as shortages of both human and material resources to effectively deal with criminals.
He said this was attributable to the unfriendly economic situation currently prevailing in the country.
Chief Supt Magwenzi said both internal and external forces had posed a major setback in their policing initiatives, through the provision of either financial or technological support to criminal elements if society.
“In light of the above, we cannot however sit back and relax because failure can never be an option. The adage of thinking outside the box has helped us to keep our position on top of the situation,” he said.
Chief Supt Magwenzi said corruption has become rampant in the country and that the force has not been spared from the scourge.
He said the force advocates for the adoption of zero tolerance on corruption and other related crimes.
