Vitori finds way out of the darkness

LEFT-ARM seamer Brian Vitori is struggling to come to terms with the feeling that overwhelmed him after he picked the last wicket which handed Zimbabwe a two-run triumph over their arch-rivals Afghanistan in an ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier at Queens Sports Club on Tuesday. The bowler has just returned from time on the sidelines after he was banned by the ICC for an illegal bowling action at the end of 2016.

‘’It was a tough year for me on the sidelines, when you watch the boys play, you know you want to be part of the team. It was a nice feeling to be the one to finish it off for the team,’’ Vitori said.

His heroics were also a relief for coach Heath Streak who has stood firmly behind the bowler and gave him a chance straight after his suspension was lifted in January.

He was tasked with either denying Afghanistan the four runs they needed for victory or pick up the one wicket Zimbabwe required in the tense last over.

The 28-year old got Shapoor Zadran to edge one to Brendan Taylor.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game after the low score we had set so it was up to us the opening bowlers. In the first overs we were going for the wickets,’’ he said.
