IGAVA and Maphisa Vocational Training Centres are being revamped by the Government and will be renamed, Igava after President Mnangagwa and Maphisa after the late Vice President Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo, in honour of the two great leaders of Zimbabwe.
Both vocational training centres will have a training centre of the National Youth Service in Zimbabwe to streamline ideas and ideals.
Igava is in Marondera, Mashonaland East Province, while Maphisa is in Matabeleland South Province.
Speaking at the official opening of the ministry’s Strategic Planning Review Workshop (2026-2030) in Bulawayo yesterday, Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training Minister Tino Machakaire said this was the time to scale up everything across the board.
“We are saying vocational training is a priority. In this vein, we are expanding Igava and Maphisa Vocational Training Cntres s and will rename them. Igava VTC will be renamed Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa VTC in honour of His Excellency President Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa.
“On the other hand, Maphisa VTC will be rebranded to Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo in honour of the late former Vice-President Dr Nkomo.
“This is in line with the Ministry’s vision to preserve our history and inspire generations who should learn from the sacrifices made by the founding fathers of this country. Both these VTCs will also have a wing for National Youth Service in Zimbabwe training.”
Minister Machakaire said the Government would construct more vocational traniing centres across the country with the proposal having already been approved, while graduates from the National Youth Service in Zimbabwe will be prioritised for employment across different sectors.
“We have successfully advocated for the construction of vocational training centres across the country under the presidential programmes, and I am pleased to inform you that this proposal has been accepted.
“Secondly, we have engaged with the Office of the President and Cabinet again to facilitate access to system funds for vocational training centres and this has also been approved,” he said.
