Volleyball clubs set for Zone 6 championship

FOUR clubs are set to leave for Swaziland tomorrow for the 10-day Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB) Zone 6 Championships that start tomorrow. Last year’s finalists ZRP Support Unit and NABA will represent Zimbabwe in the men’s category, while the University of Zimbabwe and Bulawayo’s ZRP Raiders will compete in the women’s section.

Zimbabwe Volleyball Association (ZVA) secretary-general Ringisai Mapondera said they would have wanted to send six teams to the championships, but financial constraints had forced them to drop two others.

Mapondera was optimistic that the four travelling clubs would represent the country with honour. “There has been a vast improvement in the teams that’ve represented us at the Zone 6 Championships and we’re hoping that they will do us proud in Swaziland.

“We’re hoping ZRP Support Unit, who lost in the finals last year, will this time go all the way and get gold,” said Mapondera. “In the women’s category, we expect the University of Zimbabwe to do well and at least get past the preliminary stages in which they bowed out last year. For (ZRP) Raiders, who’re going there for the first time, we’re also expecting a good outing for them considering that they’ve been one of the top teams on the local scene.”

A lot will also be expected from NABA, who were eliminated in the quarter-final stage last year.

The championships come soon after ZVA president Frederick Ndlovu was elected the CAVB Zone 6 president at the organisation’s elective congress held in Algeria last week.
