Volleyball league returns

part as the Zimbabwe Volleyball Association revives their ambitious project of setting up a national league.
The volleyball motherbody introduced the national league last year with 10 men and 10 women’s teams.
But was later cancelled as some of the clubs failed to comply with the national association’s requirements. Some of the teams failed to pay the affiliation fees while some were failing to fulfil their matches.
However, in their efforts to take the sport to another level, the mother body have set up a national league again that will feature nine men’s teams and the games are set to commence today at Danhiko. The nine teams that will compete are Black Rhinos, Support Unit, Stanbic Thunder, Hawks, NABA Stars, CAAZ, Kutama Old Boys Association, JS Harare and Railstars who are the only team from outside Harare.
The teams are expected to pay US$500 affiliation fees and a further US$100 as registration fees for the year. They will pay US$5 registration per official and per player. Those that are not playing in the league will have their money channelled to their province.
ZVA secretary Ringisai Mapondera said they were hopeful that this year’s league will be a success.

“We are starting with nine men’s teams, those are the only teams that responded. There was only one women’s team that had shown interest.
“This time around we have learnt from last year and all the teams that are playing in the league have paid their affiliation fees, we agreed that no team will play without paying,” said Mapondera.
Mapondera said the games will be played in Harare and Bulawayo.
“The games will be in Harare and Bulawayo. It’s a national league so the board said the games will be played in both provinces.
“Railstars are the only team from Bulawayo and the rest are from Harare but this is not about where the team hails from but the concept.
“We do not have a sponsor for now and that’s why we are taking the league to Harare and Bulawayo but we do hope that in the future we will be able to take it around the country,” said Mapondera.
The ZVA secretary said they are also hoping to introduce a national league for beach volleyball.
“We are also on the national league for beach volleyball. We are still working on that. We started beach volleyball this year and we are really driving it. We hope next year we will start a national league,” said Mapondera.
Mapondera said since beach volleyball teams are made up of two players it will be easy for the teams to travel around the country.
