The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission today begins voter registration in constituencies where by-elections will be held to fill 14 National Assembly seats left vacant following the recall of MDC-T legislators. The pilot voter registration will be held at various centres in the constituencies ahead of the by-elections on June 10.
“It is hereby notified that for general information ZEC shall be conducting the pilot voter registration exercise in Harare East, Kambuzuma, Glen View South, Dzivaresekwa, Highfield West, Kuwadzana, Pumula, Makokoba, Luveve, Tsholotsho North, Lobengula, Mpopoma-Pelandaba, Mbizo and Chikanga-Dangamvura constituencies between 22nd of April 2015 and the 28th of April 2015.
“The voters’ roll shall also be open for inspection during the same period,” said ZEC’s acting chief elections officer Mr Utoile Silaigwana.
Mr Silaigwana said people coming to register or inspect the voters’ roll would be required to produce a national identification document or valid passport while those registering for the first time would also have to produce proof of residence.
Over 200 centres have been established in the constituencies for the voter registration exercise.
At least 102 candidates from different political parties and independents successfully filed their nomination papers to contest the by-elections when the nomination courts sat in various parts of the country last week.
The 14 seats fell vacant when MDC-T recalled 21 legislators from Parliament after they joined a new political formation.
The other seven — four from the National Assembly and three Senators — were elected through proportional representation and the MDC-T will nominate their replacements as required by law.
