THE Vovita-sponsored National Association of Primary School Heads (Naph) Super Cup semi-finals featuring teams from Matobo district’s eight zones will be held at Minda High and Mahetshe Primary schools in Maphisa today.
Vovita is a bottled water and maheu producing company based in Harare and Bulawayo.
The Super Cup is a netball and soccer competition, with girls also participating in the soccer event. Two zones will form a single team for both the soccer and netball contests.
Naph Matobo district chairman Dubilizwe Mpofu said they had always funded their own tournaments and games, and were excited to have Vovita as their first sponsor in the district.
“We’re very lucky to have Vovita sponsoring a tournament in our district for the first time ever. In the past we financed tournaments from our own pockets,” said Mpofu.
He said the netball semi-finals would be played at Minda High and soccer at Mahetshe High. The four teams, Mpofu said, won in the knockout stages that had been held from the beginning of the term.
“We’ll use this tournament to select our district teams for the two disciplines. All players competing in the semi-finals are considered as the best in their zones and that gives us a challenge to select a few that’ll make up the teams.”
Vovita chief executive officer, Justice Moyo said they had decided to chip in with medals and trophies for the children to make the tournament a worthwhile event.
“We’ve sponsored Naph with 60 medals and two trophies. The medals are for all the participating teams and the trophies are for the netball and soccer winners respectively. We’ve also initiated a raffle draw for the schools and the winners will be announced on the day of the tournament,” Moyo said.
The raffle draw is for pupils with the individual winners walking away with $200, $100 and $50.
Moyo said they were delighted to be part of the Naph games and their sponsorship was the first step to a long and healthy relationship.
“We took it upon ourselves to give back to the community and help grow sports. It’s important for the schools to receive the support of businesses, especially in districts outside urban areas. Rural schools are usually overlooked and we’re out here to change all that. This is just the beginning and more sponsorship is still to come,” he said.
