Sixty-one years since the first ZANU Congress was held at Mtapa Community Hall in Gweru and 45 years into national democracy, Zimbabwe’s Independence Flame was lit today at the same venue.

Vice President Dr Constantino Chiwenga led proceedings, igniting the flame that officially kicked off celebrations for the country’s independence.

The fact that the ceremony was held at Mtapa Hall ignited memories and was symbolic as it was at the same venue where the revolutionary ZANU held its first national congress and decided to wage the liberation struggle.

VP Chiwenga highlighted the significance of ZANU’s 1964 Congress.

He also called on the youth to continue to preserve the hard-won independence and cherish national unity.

“The Independence Flame serves as our eternal symbol of the struggle, sacrifice, triumph, and spirit of our beloved nation, Zimbabwe,” said VP Chiwenga.

“The 1964 ZANU Congress was a pivotal event in Zimbabwe’s history as the decision to wage the armed struggle was taken during that congress at this venue,” said Dr Chiwenga.
