VICE President Dr Chiwenga has stressed that no one in the SADC region should die of hunger as he commended the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Committee of Ministers Responsible for Disaster Risk Management (DRM) for taking an active approach to mitigate the impact of disasters.
He said climate change has seen an increase in disasters noting that collaboration among Member States is critical.
Delivering his keynote address at the SADC Committee of Ministers Responsible for Disaster Risk Management (DRM), VP Chiwenga said an estimated 58 million people are food insecure in at least 12 member States.
“No one should die of hunger in the region,” he said.
“This high-level meeting comes in the backdrop of El Nino drought in the region, Zimbabwe included.
“The El Niño drought affected several sectors ranging from agriculture, health and education
“An estimated 58 million people are food insecure in at least 12 member state countries.”
“Through the Regional Humanitarian Appeal, all these disasters require US$5,5 billion.”
VP Chiwenga stressed the region should have a united plan of action as the disasters transcend borders.
He said it is disheartening that the disasters claim lives, and threaten economies.
