VICE-PRESIDENT Joice Mujuru has fulfilled her pledge to source a bus for the Roman Catholic-run Regina Coeli High School. VP Mujuru made the pledge when she officiated at the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims at the site of the 1991 Regina Coeli Bus Disaster on November 28, 2010.
In a speech read on her behalf at the handover of the 75-seater AVM bus at the school last week by the Minister of State in her office, Cde Sylvester Nguni, she said the accident would be a total loss unless something was learnt from the tragedy.
“I also take note that as efforts intensify to tame the traffic jungle, the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe is in the process of crafting and drafting a national road safety policy. This policy is expected to spell out the specific roles that should be played by road safety stakeholders in Zimbabwe.
“I therefore urge all Zimbabweans and relevant institutions including the local authorities, Zimbabwe Republic Police, Vehicle Inspection Department, transport operators and Government ministries, among other stakeholders to input their views in the national road safety policy. This is a timely development in this United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety. The earlier we have this national road safety policy, the better, as we do not want to lose human lives unnecessarily,” she said.
The Regina Coeli Bus Disaster, which has the highest death toll of 88 people to die in a single accident in the country, happened on August 3, 1991 when students and staff members were returning from a sporting event at St Killian’s Mission near Rusape.
