VUZU parties remain one of the well-coordinated havens for drug and substance abuse targeting children, a senior cop has said.
Vuzu parties are gatherings, where young people drink alcohol, smoke and sniff drugs, as well as engage in casual sex.
Officer Commanding Harare North District, Chief Superintendent Reason Ncube, told a Drug Awareness Campaign at Dzivaresekwa Extension yesterday that a sizable number of youths have been admitted at mental health institutions, due to drug abuse.
“I am sure the Vuzu parties remain one of the examples of well-coordinated drug and substance abuse (centres) targeting our children.
“The 2021 World Drug Report gives a sadder number, outlining that about 36 million people suffer from drug disorders.
“Global statistics also show that about 5.5 percent of the population, between 14 and 64 years, have used or are still abusing drugs,” said Chief Supt Ncube. It is a fact that our streets are now safe havens for various drugs.
“Crystal meth, popularly known as Guka or Mutoriro or Dombo, marijuana, commonly known as mbanje, cocaine, broncleer and other hard drugs have found their way into our streets and society, hence this awareness campaign,” he said.
Chief Supt Ncube said an increase in drug-related crimes, including domestic violence, robbery, theft, unlawful entry, assaults and even death by suicide, were committed under the influence of drugs.
“Similarly, in our roads, we have witnessed an increase in road traffic accidents, resulting in loss of precious lives, due to alcohol, drugs and substance abuse.
“Today, we are gathered here to promote drug awareness as a source of credible and accurate information on illicit drugs.
“The goal of the campaign is to mobilise support and inspire people to act against drug and substance abuse.
“I, therefore, call upon every citizen, business, elders, chiefs, clergy, youth, vendors and each and every one to act, and act now, in the fight against drug and substance abuse.”
He warned those involved in drug trafficking that the long arm of the law will catch up with them.
